Our Beginnings
Zio’s Catering is owned by Paul and Marina Maiani, along with their son, Anthony. Paul, the son of San Marino (Northern Italy) immigrants, has always had an impetuosity for cooking. To follow his passion, Paul started working at San Marino club while attending culinary school. However, to pay the bills, eventually commenced vocation in construction. Although, Paul’s love for food never stopped. After meeting Marina, the daughter of Italian (Lazio Region) immigrants. The two grew their love while cooking for family and friends. Paul’s cooking gifts and Marina’s knowledge of canning fresh homemade tomatoes, and hand rolling natural pasta abilities traveled fast.
Destiny struck in the year 2000, when Julie, the sister of Marina threw a New Year’s Eve party with 150 attending quests. Julie acquainted of Paul’s and Marina’s exceptional gifts for food making, did not hesitate to proposition the couple in making the party’s main course. Throughout the evening, the quests were shocked with amazement and they filled the rooms conversations by complimenting the chefs. With the excitement and new-found confidence from achievement Paul and Marina started excepting catering offers from family and friends. People would say get Zio (uncle in Italian) to cook, have Zia (aunt in Italian) make pasta, and it stuck. Eventually, this round and about couple worked their way in becoming St. Therese of Lisieux exclusive cater.
Family Business
Four years after graduating with a business management degree, and after playing professional hockey, Anthony helped his parents officially start Zio’s Catering in 2015. They re-outfitted an old pizzeria and opened a storefront in Washington Twp, Michigan. Zio’s name was built on working with churches and charity fundraising events while sponsoring local athletic clubs. The community tasted Zio’s amazing offerings by the giving from their huge hearts.
Largest Event
The largest event to-date was in 2018 while catering for military men and women at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. That night, 3,000 people relished in the finest Italian cuisine there is to offer. Zio’s longest service to-date was in the summer of 2019. Zio’s catered for a large manufacturers company, serving over 500 workers on three separate shifts. Currently, Zio’s employs six full-time employees, fifteen part-time employees, and two managers to administer its ever-growing business. Zio’s is currently in construction efforts to expand their internal space, doubling the kitchen and refrigeration capacity.
Moving Forward
We look forward to not just serving the Metro Detroit community, but expanding our relationships with churches, charitable organizations, and fundraising events. Weather it is the sad realization of a death in the family or a wonderful gender reveal party, Zio’s Catering will not just leave you with a great taste and wanting more, but a warm feeling in your heart.
